Marine Structural Engineering
In order to best meet our Clients’ needs the company is organised as a project organisation with several civil and marine structural engineering teams each with a focus on certain Client-Market-Product combinations.

Coastal Engineering & Water Management
Coastal engineering, is one of the core expertise areas of Bam International. The interaction between land and water creates complex environments. Coastal areas and river banks have always been important to trade and are therefore vital links in the economic chain.

Geotechnical Engineering
Geotechnical Engineering is a fundamental part of Bam International design process. It is the application of soil and rock mechanics to the design of structures on or in the ground.

Digital Design & BIM Services
The Virtual Design & Drafting department provides all visual information about the design process. Drawings and visualisations are essential for the construction process to communicate about the design to all stakeholders in the design and construction. The design and drafting industry has developed rapidly the past years and exchange rate of information has become important.

Material Testing Technology
The Materials Technology department of Bam International has all necessary knowledge about concrete at its disposal: technology and production as well as service life, durability and sustainability. The department supervises the building process in all its phases: from design and building to maintenance.

Pile Driving Analysis
First there is the pile design. Bam International can design and advise on the required pile type and length. Secondly the pile needs to be driven. Delta Marine Consultants can advise on the optimum driving hammer for the job. Pile driveability analysis is carried out based on the pile and soil data.
Learn moreTidal Energy
On the predicted moment flood is coming in and later on the tide is going out. A natural phenomenon caused by the gravitational forces of the moon and to a lesser extent the sun. As water flows in and out estuaries, it caries energy.
Electricity can be generated from tidal energy by two main types:
- Tidal Stream - Kinetic Energy
- Barrage - Potential Energy
Wave Energy
Wave energy has a strong potential to become an important source of energy in the next decades. The energy available in waves is high and technical challenges lie ahead to convert this enery to electricity at high effiency rates. The available wave energy resources vary around the globe and some locations are not suitable for efficient generation of wave energy.
- Oscillating Water Column and Overtopping
- Wave energy convertor, referred to as 'Ocean Falls'
Wind Energy
Wind energy is by far the largest contributor to the share of renewable energy. The construction in a marine environment is much more complicated than the installation of land based facilities and hence the costs associated with the development of offshore wind energy projects are therefore higher compared to onshore projects.
Bam International can offer:
- Wind and wave loading
- Soil-structure interaction, static and dynamic
- Scour protection
Waterlab Model Testing
In most breakwater and shore protection projects, physical model tests are carried out for design confirmation or optimisation. Model tests are also carried out to increase the scientific knowledge on the behaviour of single layer armour units, and to test new applications. Since 2009 Bam International offers 2D physical model tests for breakwaters and shore protections in their state-of-the-art wave flume in Gouda, the Netherlands.
In the BAM wave flume we can study the following items:
- Breakwaters, dams and dikes
- Caisson structures
- Crown walls
Ecobeach, and how does it work?
Ecobeach is a relatively simple, innovative beach drainage system that has been developed with the basic intention to stabilize the sand volume of beaches that are sensitive to erosion. A potential side effect would be an increase of the amount of sand volume. A stable beach and/or accretion of beach has a positive effect on the development of the beach ecosystem. Besides, Ecobeach in combination with a sand replenishment at the foreshore can be more cost-effective compared to a relatively expensive beach nourishment. The CO2 emission will be reduced to zero after installation (operational phase). The drainage tubes are also sustainable, because they can potentially be re-used.
Ecobeach originates from Denmark were it was developed in the nineties using the name “PEM-system”. The developed drainage system has been tested on various beaches all over the word since the invention in the nineties. The vertical drainage system has been installed for the first time in the Netherlands in 2006, using the name Ecobeach
The Ecobeach system causes a transport of sand from the foreshore to higher parts of the beach and prevents the sand from being removed from the beach. The application of Ecobeach in combination with a foreshore nourishment results in a more effective nourishment with a longer lifetime of the nourishment.
Tunnels Projects
Bam International has always been involved in tunnel projects. Our list includes cut and cover tunnels as well as immersed and bored tunnels. We can design any and every aspect of a tunnel, from concept design to detail design for both permanent and temporary structures. We also can carry out the site engineering.
Everything we know about immersed tunnels has been passed down from our older generation to the younger one, which has taken that expertise and expanded it based on new experiences. We are one of the few companies to have had hands-on experience with steel tunnels in the United States as well as concrete tunnels in Europe. We were involved in the development of the bored tunnel in the Netherlands from the start.
Besides the design of immersed tunnels, we also have comprehensive experience with the design of cut and cover tunnels. The cut and cover technique is for instance used for road and rail tunnels but also for underground car parks. The latter usually form part of projects in built-up inner city areas. The associated technical and logistical problems during construction call for creative design solutions.
Relationships
Through frequent liaison with local firms in overseas projects, consistent working relationships with companies in various countries around the world have been built up.
